If an assistant can't read your specs, it can't recommend your part.

Capability 6

If an assistant can't read your specs, it can't recommend your part.

A growing share of technical research starts with a question typed into an assistant rather than a query typed into a search box. Both need the same thing from you: a separate page for each part, with its specs written into the page code when it first loads.

This page passes its own test. View source and the specifications are there before any script runs.

The failure mode

Invisible to a crawler, invisible to an assistant, invisible to the buyer

Many technical catalogs load their spec tables in the browser with JavaScript after the page arrives. The page looks right in a browser and contains almost nothing in its source. A crawler sees a product name and a breadcrumb. An assistant asked which suppliers carry a 100nF 0402 X7R at 50V has nothing to work with, so it answers with the suppliers whose data it can read.

This is not a ranking problem to be fixed with metadata. It is an availability problem: the information a buyer needs in order to choose you is not present at the moment anything is reading.

What we do about it

Structured, addressable, and present before the JavaScript runs

The requirements overlap almost entirely between traditional search and assistant-driven research, which is convenient: doing this properly for one does it for the other.

No tabs hiding parts

Every item is individually addressable. Versions of a part that differ on a spec buyers filter by each get their own page and link.

Specs in the HTML

Spec values are included in the page when it is sent, so they are there before any scripts run. This is the single most common failure and the cheapest to fix in a replatform.

Product and price labels for search engines (schema.org Product and Offer)

Specs tagged in the standard format search engines read, with units, so a machine reading the page knows 4.7µF is a capacitance rather than a string.

Filtered views are pages

Every filtered view has its own link that search engines can list, which is how very specific spec searches lead to your site rather than to a listing site.

Programmatic maintenance

Metadata generated from the PIM, so 12,000 product pages do not end up sharing one cloned description.

Content written as direct answers

FAQ and comparison content marked up so it can be quoted directly, with the attribution attached.
