GLOSSARY

The Vocabulary, Defined.

Two industries use different words for the same capability, which makes searching for it harder than it should be. Electronics says parametric search; industrial says product finder. Both are here, mapped to each other.

Terms

Where a term has an adjacent-industry equivalent, both are listed.

Parametric Search

Also: Product finder, part finder, spec-based filtering

Narrowing a catalog by attribute values rather than by category. The usual electronics-industry term; industrial buyers know the same capability by the other names above.

PIM

Product information management. The one central, controlled place for every specification, attribute value, datasheet figure and image across the catalog.

Unit-Aware Matching

Converting values to standard units before comparing them, so 1000nF and 1µF match the same part, and 4k7 (resistor shorthand) matches 4,700 Ω.

Attribute Density

How many meaningful specifications each part carries. An 8,000-SKU connector catalog at 40 attributes per part is a harder and better-fitting problem than a 200,000-SKU apparel catalog.

BOM

Bill of materials. The list of parts and quantities a design requires. It shows what the buyer plans to build, so it tells you more than any single part.

RFQ

Request for quote. In a technical catalog it should carry the whole BOM with context, not arrive as a contact form message.

Design-In

The point at which an engineer specifies your part into their design. A sample request is usually its earliest visible signal.

Channel Integration

Live distributor pricing and availability shown in the page, so a buyer can confirm supply without leaving.

Single-Tenant

Your own isolated database and deployment, rather than records co-mingled with other customers in a shared store.

Integration Tax

The recurring cost of bolting third-party search and a standalone PIM onto a platform with no built-in way to manage product data.

Programmatic SEO

Generating and maintaining pages from structured product data, so one template change propagates across the whole catalog.

Zero-Result Search

A query that returns nothing. The most useful report in a technical catalog: it is a list of what buyers want and you do not list, or cannot match.
